Designing an Accessibility Culture For Workplace Inclusion

About this Event The Riveter is excited to partner with Breaking the Bias, DIVersity and The Blind Institute of Technology as we take a hands-on approach to center people and talent with disabilities in our workplace. We will focus on a wide spectrum of experiences, aiming to build empathy through the lens of each employee’s unique journey through a workplace. We will then identify opportunities for improvement and techniques that help you build an organization where any deaf and visually impaired talent envisions themselves working there every day and being successful. 

We know we cannot achieve equity of opportunity for all in the workplace if we aren’t inclusive of our colleagues with disabilities. Through becoming aware and exploring accessibility for blind, visually impaired and deaf talent, we can consciously choose to build a more inclusive workplace for all. 

The goal is to move away from accommodations-thinking and into universal design where workplace culture and environments are usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible. This workshop demonstrates how diversity and inclusion impacts workplace culture, communication, and environment design. At the end of it, participants will gain a new understanding of how others move through space, how to disrupt their biases through conscious daily actions, and the tools to advocate for change tomorrow. 

Everyone is welcome to attend. We need more allies at the table for blind, visually impaired and deaf talent. 

The audience will walk away with a community and actionable knowledge on: 

• The neuroscience behind why we behave with bias and tools to reduce bias in your team 
• 10 ways to make your workplace more inclusive of blind, visually impaired and deaf talent 
• Empathetic experiences of both the deaf and the blind to see how you and your employees can improve day-to-day communications to include your deaf and blind colleagues 
• Techniques that help you build an organization where any employees with disabilities envision themselves working there every day and being successful

Christie Buchele | Denver Comedian & Instructor, Co-host of Empty Girlfriend podcast (She/Her) 

Christie Buchele is an up-and-coming standup comic from Denver, Colorado. Christie has made a name for herself by sharing the heart-wrenching and hilarious realities of being a woman with a disability. Christie has been featured on Viceland’s Flophouse; Hidden America with Jonah Ray; and Laughs on Fox. Christie has been described as "brave" for leaving the house in that body. Her comedy has been described as "funny despite what she talks about" and "uncomfortable" by Christie's mom. She has opened for the likes of Josh Blue, Sean Patton and Andy Kindler. Christie co-hosts a witty relationship advice podcast, Empty Girlfriend, which earned Best Comedy Podcast by Westword Magazine's Best Of awards and Best Podcast at the Sexpot Comedy awards in 2017. As one-third of the Denver Comedy powerhouse, The Pussy Bros, Christie reps the Mile High City hard while crushing audiences with a wry, biting style that’s a bit sweet and a little bit surly, proving time and again you can say almost anything with a smile on your face and a gimp in your step. 

Nina Baliga | Co-Founder of Diversity | Head of Executive Culture and Inclusion of Jobber Group (She/Her) 

Nina is the Co-Founder of Diversity, a startup focused on creating an equitable, diverse and inclusive tech industry through a platform that is the “Glassdoor for Inclusion”. She is also the Head of Executive Culture and Inclusion at Jobber Group. As a child of immigrants, Nina has always been passionate about social justice and improving the lives of marginalized people. She began her career in the non-profit world working to empower underrepresented communities, then went on to get an MBA before she decided to teach herself front-end web development and user experience design. With nearly twenty years of experience in non-profit and for-profit organizations, she decided to dive into the startup world combining her community organizing, business, leadership and app development skills. She is currently working with the deaf in tech community to elevate their voices and hack solutions that allow for seamless communication between the hearing and the deaf.
